For this sign, our technicians cut out half-inch-thick PVC letters that feature the firm’s name. For its tagline, they selected the same depth. Next, we painted the edges of the letters in silver. Our graphic artist had determined that adding brushed metal faces would allow the PVC to look as though it were made of solid aluminum. The illusion works from the side and front, which is a must. Taking this approach was very cost-effective and resulted in a stunning display.
Save Money with Laminates
At our shop, we believe that even a startup should be able to afford a lobby sign that looks like a million bucks. However, because many startups do not have this kind of advertising budget, we have developed several laminate designs that look great and give the illusion that you have used a far more expensive material than you did.
- Base material. The most cost-effective base materials are Gatorfoam and PVC. If you plan to go past one or two inches in depth, Gatorfoam is the better option.
- Facings. We routinely work with metal and acrylic laminates. These are thin slices of the more expensive material that we mount on top of the base. The trick here is the use of a perfect cut that does not allow any of the material to look as though it were added on later.
- Overlays. Another option is the installation of imprinted vinyl. Take this approach when looking for a gradient color change or need a look with intricate graphics.
Lobby Letters or Boards?
Choosing laminates is typically something you would do for three-dimensional letters. By adding their depths to the excellent look of the metal or acrylic, you boost the great impression the product makes. However, it is not your only option. When you go for logo boards, we recommend using metal laminates or a vinyl overlay. Some clients also opt for a combination by having us manufacture a board and 3D letters that go on top.
